The first Mountain bike race in Uvita is set for July 31 2011. The route is planned to be 40 to 50 kilometers and will start and finish at El Colon La Jungla. The vision is for the bike race to be held annually and to make the event into a tradition every July 31st. The purpose of the competition apart from being a fun event is to promote Uvita and to attract more commerce and tourism to the area.
A group in El Colon La Jungla (hardware store) had the idea of the race and they are the main sponsors, the Federation of Costa Rican Cycling also supports the race. It is hoped that more local businesses will come on board this year in the future.
The route is planned to be 40 to 50 kilometers and will start and finish at El Colon La Jungla. There is predicted to be in the region of 200 competitors and all ages and cyclists are encouraged to participate in the event. The competitors will be divided into two categories, under eighteen and eighteen and over. Each category will have prizes for the first, second and third places. The first prize is $500 (USD) second $300 and third place $200.
Over recent years this area has seen rapid growth in residencial and commercial real estate in Uvita, which is turning the town into an important hub in the region for stores, services, amenities and banking. Initiatives such as the Mountain Bike race can only add the positive perspective and growth of Uvita.
